Discover Reveals 5% Bonus Categories for Q3 2024

Discover has announced its 5% bonus category selections for July through September of 2024.

About the Q3 2024 bonus categories:

Starting next month, Discover It customers can earn 5% back on purchases that fall into two special categories: grocery stores and Walmart.

First, the grocery store category includes supermarkets, meat lockers, bakeries, smaller grocery stores, and grocery delivery services. However, purchases made at Target or at convenience stores, wholesale clubs, and discount stores will not be eligible for this bonus.

Normally, Walmart would also be excluded from a grocery store category — but that’s moot this time as Walmart is another 5% bonus category selection. Notably, this includes purchases made in-store as well as online (some past quarterly offerings have been specific to Walmart.com). Furthermore, this will apply to purchases made at Walmart Supercenter Stores, Walmart Neighborhood Market Stores, and Walmart Gas Stations. Those using their Discover It card via Walmart Pay will also earn this 5% cashback bonus. In terms of exclusions, sub-retailers inside of Walmart locations, purchases made through affiliates of Walmart.com, and Sam’s Club purchases are not included in this category.

These bonus categories will be in effect from July 1st through September 30th. As always, in order to earn 5% back on these eligible categories, cardholders will need to activate the offer. This can be done on the Discover site or app. Additionally, the 5% back is limited to the first $1,500 in combined bonus category spending. In turn, cardholders can earn a maximum of $75 cashback from this deal.

With these new categories going into effect on July 1st, Discover It customers can currently still activate their Q2 offer to earn up to 5% back at gas stations, EV charging stations, public transit providers, and home improvement stores. The fourth quarter selections are set to be revealed on September 1st.

What they’re saying:

Announcing next quarter’s picks, Discover’s VP of Rewards and Product Strategy Geeta Chandan said, “We are excited that our 5% categories make it easy for cardmembers to earn cash back all summer long. With backyard barbecues, road trips and summer fun just around the corner, cardmembers can make the most of every dollar spent on groceries and other summer essentials.”

My thoughts:

Talk about irony! On the heels of Walmart and Capital One announcing their break up, we have Discover — which is set to be acquired by Capital One — revealing Walmart as a bonus category. Incidentally, while the Capital One Walmart Rewards Card offers 5% back on Walmart.com purchases by default, this bonus category bests that card’s 2% back on in-store Walmart purchases.

Speaking of one-upping, the 5% on grocery stores offer is better than the 4x I get from my American Express Gold Card (depending on how you value Amex Membership Rewards points, of course), so I could see myself using this bonus next quarter. And while I don’t have any specific Walmart purchases in mind, as a Walmart+ member, perhaps I’ll find something to buy in the next few months that will help me take full advantage of these Q3 bonus picks.
