Cadre Founder’s Latest Venture Ellis Raises $10 Million

A FinTech hailing from Cadre founder Ryan Williams has emerged from stealth and announced a round of funding.

About Ellis and Its Funding Round:

Recently, Ellis launched, announcing that it had also closed $10 million in funding. The seed round was led by First Round Capital with participation from Kearny Jackson, 645 Ventures, Harlem Capital, Khosla Ventures, Slow Ventures, Wilshire Lane, Westbound, Collide Capital, and Gallery Ventures. Individuals such as Mellody Hobson, Josh Kushner (who co-founded Cadre with Williams), Immad Akhund, and others also joined the round.

Ellis bills itself as an AI-native operation platform built for private credit. As they explain, despite private credit being a multi-trillion-dollar market, many managers rely on outdated ledgers, servicing systems, and more. Instead, Ellis’s system simplifies the process, offering tools that help streamline operations. Currently, Ellis clients have a combined total of more than $50 billion in assets under management.

Looking ahead, while Ellis is starting with private credit (due in part to founder Ryan Williams’ own experience), the company says it intends to expand, with the ultimate goal of helping capital move more quickly and intelligently.

What They’re Saying:

Discussing the idea behind Ellis, Williams (founder and CEO) noted, “Ellis is the company I wished existed every day I was building Cadre. We were creating new ways to invest in private markets, but behind every innovation sat the same operating problem: critical data lived across systems that did not speak to one another, and teams spent too much time proving which numbers were right.”

Meanwhile, First Round Capital co-founder and partner Josh Kopelman said of the company, “Nearly every FinTech cycle for the last decade has gone after the front office. Almost nobody has touched what happens behind it, and that’s exactly why it’s still broken. Ryan lived this problem for years at Cadre, and his team has the product and technical instincts to build a long-needed fix.” Kopelman concluded, “That combination has the potential to be a category-defining company that we’re proud to back.”

My Thoughts:

I have two things I want to point out about this. First, I think it’s hilarious that I’m posting this story on the same day that word of Josh Kushner (who was part of this seed round) is teaming up with Bob Iger to buy the Los Angeles Lakers. Second, I think what Kopelman said is interesting, as it speaks to the ongoing trend of FinTechs moving from being customer-facing to working behind the scenes. Apparently, Ellis is taking that even a step further. So, while I might not know exactly what they do, I know enough to see that they’re bound for success.
