Walmart Expands Into Prepared Food Delivery with Subway
Walmart’s Express Delivery option now features a popular in-store restaurant option.
About the Walmart-Subway Delivery Option:
After taking on Amazon with its Walmart+ members and Express Delivery option, the retail giant is now treading into DoorDash and Uber Eats territory with its latest offering. Recently, Walmart announced that it was partnering with Subway to deliver freshly-made sandwiches and other items to customers via Express Delivery. Subway is currently Walmart’s largest in-store restaurant tenant with more than 1,400 locations across the country.
With this partnership, customers will be able to view the Subway menu, customize their items, and place their order via the Walmart site or app. Subway states that pricing for these menu items will be consistent with in-store pricing and exclusive items found in Walmart locations (such as soft pretzels and specialty sandwiches) will also be available for delivery. Plus, Subway items can be Express Delivered alongside grocery items and other essentials. Express Delivery offers arrival times as low as 30 minutes.
To start, this Subway-Walmart offering will be available from select stores in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. However, the program is expected to expand to nearly all locations by the “end of the summer.”
More on Walmart+:
This expansion into prepared food delivery will be of particular interest to those with a Walmart+ membership. With this subscription, members enjoy free shipping with no minimum order amount, free regular delivery on orders over $35, and discounted Express delivery. Walmart+ also features discounts on gas, complimentary streaming service subscriptions, access to Walmart’s Scan & Go feature, special offers from Burger King, and more.
Right now, Walmart+ is also being offered at 50% off. That means that an annual membership is just $49. You can learn more about Walmart+ in my full review.
What They’re Saying:
In a press release announcing the partnership with Walmart, Subway North America president Damien Harmon said, “Subway has always been focused on making freshly made, quality meals accessible to customers wherever they are. The integration of Subway delivery into the Walmart app and Walmart.com is a natural evolution of our 20-year relationship built on a shared commitment to value, freshness, and everyday convenience.”
My Thoughts:
This expansion of Express Delivery makes a lot of sense for both Walmart and Subway. It could also be a win for customers as the promise of in-store pricing parity is huge, considering the mark-ups found on other food delivery apps. Of course, a delivery fee still applies, but when I punched up a test order, my fee as a Walmart+ member was only $3. Although, don’t forget the tip as well.
Meanwhile, although Subway is the largest Walmart restaurant tenant, they aren’t the only one. Thus, expect to see more partnerships in this vein emerging as Walmart beefs up its delivery services.
