Verizon Introduces New Loyalty Program, “Verizon Shine” Offers

Verizon is touting some customer-friendly changes, including the launch of a new loyalty program.

About Verizon Dollars and Verizon Shine:

Those with Verizon service could soon see a kick-back on their monthly bill — if they opt in, that is. The telecom is rolling out its new Verizon Dollars program, which will reward users with 3% back each month, starting in July. These rewards can not only be used for devices and accessories but can also be used for gift cards from select brands. Gift card examples cited include Adidas, Target, Starbucks, Sephora, and more.

These Verizon Dollars can also be combined with those earned via the Verizon Visa Card. That card earns 4% Verizon Dollars on gas, 4% on grocery store purchases, 4% on dining, and 4% on Verizon purchases, excluding your bill. All other purchases earn 1% back. Additionally, as a Verizon Visa customer, you’ll be able to redeem your Verizon Dollars toward your bill. Plus, while Verizon Dollars would typically expire after 12 months, they do not expire for cardholders.

Beyond the introduction of Verizon Dollars, the company is also unveiling its Verizon Shine program. Each Monday, a different sweepstakes offering “once-in-a-lifetime experiences” will be featured, with the initial lineup including a FIFA VIP ticket, NFL Melbourne experience, an NYC Food Tour with Andrew Zimmern, and more. Additionally, customers can check out the My Verizon app for daily drops. Verizon says that free coffee from Starbucks, treats from Dunkin’, Arby’s sandwiches, a complimentary hour at TopGolf, Ulta gift cards, and Amazon gift cards are all on tap during the program’s first month.

To get started with Verizon Dollars and Verizon Shine, customers will need to opt in. This can be done on the loyalty landing page. Verizon has announced that it is eliminating upgrade and activation fees for those who join its loyalty program, saving customers up to $40 in fees per device.

What They’re Saying:

Announcing the new loyalty programs, Verizon Consumer Group’s Interim CEO and Verizon Chief Transformation Officer Alfonso Villanueva said, “Customers reward us with their loyalty every month. Verizon Dollars lets us reward them back, on their terms.” Villanueva continued, “Not just some customers, on some plans, but for all. Customers earn Dollars every single month just for being with us, and we let them choose how to spend it.”

My Thoughts:

As a Verizon customer, this seems like good news. In fact, Verizon Shine reminds me a lot of T-Mobile Tuesday, which I used to enjoy when we had that service. Of course, this now means that I’ll need to regularly check my Verizon app lest FOMO kick in.

Meanwhile, the 3% Verizon Dollars offer sounds nice. Yet, the pessimist in me wonders if this will just be offset by an incoming rate hike. Setting that worry aside, though, I look forward to racking up Verizon Dollars and seeing what redemption options we have when this program fully rolls out next month.
