T-Mobile Announces Paramount+ Perk for Post-Paid Customers

Over the past several years, the entertainment landscape has shifted tremendously with the advent of streaming services. While this trend initially enabled consumers to save money via so-called “cord-cutting,” the sheer number of platforms that have popped up has begun to bloat some customers’ entertainment budgets. To help ease some of that burden, wireless carrier T-Mobile announced that customers will soon be able to enjoy Paramount+ for free thanks to a partnership with the streaming platform.

Starting November 9th, T-Mobile and Sprint customers with postpaid consumer wireless or home internet plans will be eligible to receive  12 free months of Paramount+ Essential for free. The “Essential” option is Paramount+’s lowest service tier, typically costing $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year. It includes limited ads but features access to “tens of thousands” of television episodes and movies, NFL on CBS live, soccer events such as Champions League live, and 24/7 live news with CBSN. Of note, after the one year of service is up, the subscription will automatically renew at the going rate unless canceled.

In a press release announcing the partnership, T-Mobile emphasized the scope of the offer, with the telecom’s president of Consumer Group Jon Freier noting, “At T-Mobile, EVERYONE means EVERYONE. And now, every one of our postpaid consumers can get a mountain of awesome entertainment with Paramount+ Essential on Us for a full year. That’s true whether you have a consumer or a home internet plan and whether you have a new Magenta MAX plan or are on a plan from 10 years ago.”

Meanwhile, ViacomCBS Streaming’s Chief Strategy Officer and Chief Business Development Officer Jeff Shultz said, “The partnership with T-Mobile is a key part to our growth strategy as we continue to scale Paramount+ to become a global leader in streaming. This incredible offer is available to T-Mobile’s full suite of postpaid consumers, exposing Paramount+ to a massive new and diverse audience that will have the opportunity to experience the service’s unmatched content portfolio and unique value proposition as a total household product.”

This is far from the first streaming offer T-Mobile has made to its customers. In 2017, the company introduced its popular Netflix on Us promotion, which continues to this day. More recently, the company has enabled customers to access one free year of Apple TV+ — although this particular deal is only available to those with Magenta and Magenta Max plans. Elsewhere, customers were also previously able to sign-up for a free year of Quibi, although that Jeffrey Katzenberg-backed service didn’t end up making it to its one-year anniversary.

Overall, this upcoming offer is good news for the wide swath of T-Mobile and Sprint customers who will now be able to add Paramount+ to their entertainment mix without spending extra. However, those who do take advantage of this deal should be sure to set a renewal reminder for themselves so that they can cancel if needed before getting charged.
