Discover is ready to close out the year with its Q4 5% bonus categories — and the one you’re probably thinking of isn’t among them.
About Discover’s Q4 2026 Bonus Categories:
As a new quarter approaches, Discover has announced its bonus category picks for Q4 2026. From October through December, cardholders can earn up to 5% back in three categories: Restaurants, Entertainment, and Utilities.
Starting with Restaurants, this includes full-service restaurants, cafes, cafeterias, fast-food locations, and caterers. However, dining establishments inside of or affiliated with other businesses may not qualify. For example, a restaurant inside of a hotel or retail store might not be eligible depending on its merchant category code. Also, bakeries may be excluded from this category.
Moving on to Entertainment, Discover notes that tickets purchased to movie theatres, sporting events, theatrical productions, concerts, amusement parks, tourist attractions, aquariums, zoos, and dance halls may qualify, as well as purchases at record stores, video rental locations, pool halls, and bowling alleys. Meanwhile, golf courses, country clubs, some collegiate sporting events, and charity events may not qualify. Also excluded are streaming services, cable subscriptions, amusement park tickets purchased through third-party sites, and entertainment purchased as part of a resort package.
Finally, Utilities includes residential electricity, natural gas, and water service as well as internet, cable, satellite TV, and phone service purchases made online or via the phone. Purchases made at physical stores or via third parties (such as landlords, property management companies, or HOAs) may not qualify. Additionally, home fuel delivery, standalone streaming service purchases, and some satellite phone/internet services are excluded, along with vehicle connectivity, accessories, or equipment.
As always, in order to earn this bonus, cardholders will need to activate this offer in the Discover app or on the site. Also, the 5% cashback rate is capped at a total of $1,500 in combined bonus category spending. In other words, at most, cardholders can earn $75 cashback from this offer during the quarter.
My Thoughts:
It is absolutely shocking that Amazon is not among these fourth-quarter bonus category picks. This breaks a streak that goes back more than a decade!
Putting that surprise aside, these are some pretty practical category picks. I’m particularly a fan of the Utilities category — although I’d personally prefer it to fall deeper into the winter (Q1, perhaps) when our house heating needs tend to push our utilities bill higher. Of course, Entertainment and Restaurants are always solid choices for most consumers.
Anyway, if you’re a Discover It cardholder, be sure to activate this offer before the new quarter begins.
