Monarch Acquires Company Formerly Known as HMBradley

The growing personal finance app Monarch has announced a new acquisition, while also highlighting a major milestone.

About Monarch’s Acquisition of MBI:

Today, Monarch revealed that it had acquired the company MBI (formerly known as HMBradley). As MBI CEO Zach Bruhnke explains, while the neobank then known as HMBradley ended customer services in 2023, the company continued to develop technology and tools behind the scenes. Now, Bruhnke will lead a new division called Monarch Labs.

Monarch says that the new Labs team will develop more financial tools and services that can be added to the platform, while also improving the app’s core product. In their announcement, Monarch also highlighted specific HMBRadley features, such as Routines (which allowed customers to create customizable triggers to move money and more) — although they didn’t explicitly state that such capabilities would be integrated into the app.

News of Monarch’s acquisition comes as the company has also reached $100 million in annual recurring revenue. The app also currently has more than 1 million members.

What They’re Saying:

In a press release, Monarch’s co-founder and CEO Val Agostino noted, “With more than one million members and $100 million in ARR, Monarch has reached an exciting new stage of growth. This scale gives us the opportunity to further invest in our mission, and bringing the MBI team on board is an important part of that next chapter.”

Agostino continued, “We’re building toward a future where Monarch doesn’t just provide deep insight, but helps consumers confidently take action and make the most of their money to build the lives they want.”

Meanwhile, Bruhnke stated, “Our team has spent the better part of a decade learning how to build both consumer financial products and the infrastructure behind them. Joining Monarch gives us the scale, distribution, and trust to move much faster and become a much bigger part of people’s financial lives, while continuing to do what we love.”

My Thoughts:

I’ve already called out Monarch as being in the pole position to replace Mint, and I think that this announcement further solidifies that. While I was never an HMBradley user, I was aware of them (although not aware enough to know that they were still working in the background). The idea of Monarch not only acquiring these assets but building a dedicated division for creating new tools is very exciting to me and I believe it will lead to innovative and creative advantages for Monarch in the long run.
