With the summer travel season upon us, American Express and Delta have rolled out elevated limited-time offers for many of their SkyMiles credit cards.
About the Limited-Time Welcome Bonuses:
Those applying for one of three Delta SkyMiles American Express consumer credit cards can currently earn enhanced welcome bonuses.
Starting with the Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card, new cardholders can now earn 80,000 bonus SkyMiles after spending $3,000 on the card within their first six months. Meanwhile, the Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card is offering 90,000 SkyMiles after $4,000 in purchases during the first six months. Finally, with the Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card, new cardmembers can earn 100,000 SkyMiles by spending at least $6,000 on the card within their first six months from account opening.
Each of these offers will only be around for a limited time. In fact, Delta notes that these deals will expire on July 16th, 2025.
About the Delta SkyMiles Cards:
In addition to these lucrative, elevated welcome bonuses, each of these Delta SkyMiles cards has plenty of perks for flyers. For example, with any of these cards, customers can earn a 15% discount on Delta award travel flights. Plus, cardmembers enjoy their first checked bag free along with up to eight other passengers on their same reservation. Each card also entitles members to Zone 5 Priority Boarding.
Looking more closely at each card, the Delta SkyMiles Gold card earns 2x miles on Delta purchases, 2x miles at restaurants, and 2x miles at U.S. supermarkets (all other purchases earn 1 SkyMile per dollar spent). As for other perks, cardholders can get a 20% rebate on in-flight purchases. Also, those who spend at least $10,000 in purchases during a calendar year can receive a $200 Delta Flight Credit. While this card does have a $150 annual fee, that is waived for the first year.
Turning to the Delta SkyMiles Platinum card, it earns 3x on Delta purchases, 3x at hotels, 2x at restaurants, 2x at U.S. supermarkets, and 1x on all other purchases. The SkyMiles Platinum also includes some key credits, including $10 per month in statement credits on purchases at Resy restaurants in the U.S. and $10 a month in statement credits triggered by U.S. rideshare purchases. If maxed out, that’s $240 in credits, which can offset the card’s $350 annual fee. On top of that, though, cardholders can earn a Companion Certificate (good on a Main Cabin domestic, Caribbean, or Central American round-trip flight) each year after renewal.
Lastly, the $650 annual fee Delta SkyMiles Reserve card has one key perk: complimentary Delta Sky Club access when flying Delta. By default, cardholders can enjoy up to 15 visits per Medallion year — however, those who spend at least $75,000 per Medallion year on the card can unlock unlimited visits. What’s more, like the SkyMiles Platinum, the Reserve card also features multiple credits, including up to $20 per month on Resy restaurant purchases in the U.S. and $10 a month on U.S. rideshare purchases. Additionally, upon renewal, cardmembers receive one Companion Certificate for a First Class, Delta Comfort, or Main Cabin domestic, Caribbean, or Central American round-trip.
My Thoughts:
All three of these deals are fairly strong and could absolutely come in handy for summer or fall travels. As for which card I’d pick, that’s a difficult question to answer. For those who really only care about the bonus miles, the Delta SkyMiles Gold may be the way to go, especially since the annual fee is waived for the first year. Meanwhile, those who fly Delta more often and can make good use of the Resy and rideshare credits may find the Delta SkyMiles Platinum card to be the sweet spot. The Delta SkyMiles Reserve card might also be valuable to some — but, personally, I prefer the American Express Platinum card, which has a similar annual fee but offers a greater variety of perks as well as Sky Club access when flying Delta.
Whichever card you ultimately choose, be sure to get your application in by July 16th in order to claim these limited-time offers.
