Cardless Introduces New Orleans Pelicans Credit Card for Fans

The FinTech Cardless is at it again, debuting another co-branded credit card with a professional sports time. This time around, the startup is back in the NBA, announcing the release of the New Orleans Pelicans credit card.

With the Pelicans card, fans will be able to earn 4 points per dollar spent on gas as well as 4x points on dining and select food delivery purchases. They’ll also earn 4x on Pelicans tickets purchased directly or via Seat Geek. All other purchases will earn 1x points.

These points can then be redeemed for a statement credit at a rate of 1¢ each or can be worth 1.25¢ each when used to purchase Fanatics gift cards. The New Orleans Pelicans card carries no annual fee.

As for other perks, Pelicans cardholders will receive 10% off concessions at Smoothie King Arena as well as 10% in-store or online purchases from the Pelicans Team Store. Fans will also have the chance to experience special events, opportunities, and more. For example, the site lists pre-game tunnel visits, player meet and greets, photo ops, and other experiences as potential reward redemptions.

To further interest fans, the New Orleans Pelicans card also has a welcome bonus. Currently, new cardholders who make at least $2,000 in purchases within their first three months will earn 30,000 bonus points. These points amount to $300 cashback or $375 in Pelicans merchandise (via Fanatics gift cards).

The Pelicans card is the latest product in Cardless’s growing slate of sports team-themed cards. Currently, the line-up also includes the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Marlins, and Manchester United. While all of these cards feature similar perks for fans, the specific rewards and categories do vary.

Despite finding a niche in sports fandom, Cardless co-founder and president Michael Spelfoge has previously stated that the company is exploring opportunities in other areas as well. As he said at the time of the company’s $40 million Series B last year, “We’re committed to supporting the super users of today’s influential brands across a variety of verticals.”

Once again, Cardless has created a credit card that not only appeals to fans of the team — in this case, the New Orleans Pelicans — but perhaps also catches the interest of everyday consumers. To that point, the gas and dining 4x categories are among the best for a no annual fee card. As a result, while the card is surely a slam dunk for Pelicans fans, it may also be worth a closer look for anyone looking to earn credit card rewards.
