Amazon Business Credit Cards to Transition to U.S. Bank Issuance
Amazon’s business credit card portfolio is officially moving to a new issuer.
About the Amazon Business Credit Card Issuer Transition:
This week, Amazon announced that its Amazon Business Card and Prime Business Card would no longer be issued by American Express. Instead, both options will move to U.S. Bank and will now operate on the Mastercard network. The change comes eight years after Amazon and Amex launched the business credit cards. Meanwhile, Amazon’s consumer credit cards continue to be issued by Chase. Additionally, a secured Amazon credit card option from Synchrony is also available.
With the Prime Business Card, Amazon Prime members can earn 5% back on Amazon purchases, while those without a Prime membership can earn 3% back on Amazon purchases with the Amazon Business Card. Neither version of the card carried an annual fee. Additionally, the retailer teases that more “exciting new benefits” will be announced for the updated cards. Details on those new perks will be announced in the coming months.
Current cardholders will automatically be transitioned from Amex to U.S. Bank. Leading up to this, American Express notes that customers can continue to use and earn rewards on their card through August 13th, 2026. Additional FAQs and deadlines can be found on Amex’s site.
As a result of this conversion, new card applications are currently unavailable. However, those interested in applying for the card once it’s live can sign up to be notified.
What They’re Saying:
Announcing the update to the cards and the benefits of the transition, Amazon’s director and GM of Worldwide B2B Payments & Lending Tai Koottatep said, “Convenient, rewarding payment options start with listening to the customer. Small businesses told us they wanted more ways to earn rewards wherever they shop and better tools to manage cash flow. We partnered with U.S. Bank and Mastercard to build a card program that delivers exactly that.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Bank’s SEVP of Payments: Consumer and Small Business Courtney Kelso stated, “We’re incredibly proud of our reputation as a top bank for small business owners, We are excited to partner with Amazon and Mastercard to empower small businesses with meaningful rewards and easy-to-use tools to manage spending, and, in the near future, offer these small businesses more value with additional U.S. Bank services.”
My Thoughts:
It was pretty big news when Amex and Amazon teamed up for these business credit cards back in 2018, so it’s a bit surprising to see that relationship ending. Moreover, it’s always unfortunate when a product gets pulled during these transitional periods. But, hopefully, these added benefits Amazon is teasing will be worth it for cardholders and make the U.S. Bank versions of these cards even better.
