FinTech Greenlight Launches First Physical Product: GPS Tracker

The family banking app Greenlight is expanding, debuting its first-ever physical product.

About Greenlight Safe Family:

Recently, Greenlight announced the launch of Greenlight Safe Family. This new line of GPS-enabled, screen-free devices helps families protect their loved ones. Currently, the company offers models for children, seniors, and dogs.

In addition to GPS tracking capabilities, Greenlight Safe Family devices include an SOS button that alerts an emergency contact, customizable place alerts, and more. Greenlight says that the battery in the device can also last up to 30 days. These devices are compatible with both iOS and Android apps.

While Greenlight Safe Family Kids and Seniors models retail for $79.95 each, the company is currently selling them for 25% off. This package includes a lanyard and USB charging cable, although additional accessories, such as cases and replacement items, can be found on Greenlight’s shop.

In addition to the device fee, Greenlight Safe Family requires a monthly subscription. At this time, the device plan costs $5.99. However, those with existing Greenlight plans can add Safe Family for $4.99 a month.

More on Greenlight:

Greenlight is a neobanking app built for families. In fact, the company was just named Financial Education App of the Year by the FinTech Breakthrough Awards.

Using their platform, parents can create debit cards for their children, set up allowances in the app, and more. Plus, the service features personal finance literacy games for kids. Meanwhile, Greenlight also supports high-yield savings and investing. Subscription fees for Greenlight start at $5.99 a month for the Core plan and go up to $24.98 per month for the top-tier Family Shield plan.

What They’re Saying:

Discussing the new offering, Greenlight CEO and co-founder Tim Sheehan said, “From young children, to pets, to grandparents, families deserve solutions that help keep their loved ones safe. Greenlight Safe Family meets families where they are, offering a simple, all-in-one solution that builds on our vision to help families manage life’s everyday challenges with ease.”

My Thoughts:

This might seem a bit out of left field to some, but I actually think that this fits pretty well into Greenlight’s product line-up. Nevertheless, I do have some questions about the device and service. For example, I currently see two different Pet options (with one priced lower than the other) and I have yet to figure out the difference. Also, Greenlight’s listings say “To unlock precise location tracking, location history, place alerts, SOS alerts, and more, this device requires a monthly data plan of $5.99/month.” That makes me wonder if you can get generic location data without a plan? I probably wouldn’t try that, though.

Anyway, I’ll be curious to see if Greenlight ends up rolling out more physical products and expanding its banking plans as a result.
