American Express Business Gold Card Adds Squarespace Benefit
The business version of the American Express Gold Card has added a new benefit that enhances the premium card’s value.
About the New Squarespace Credit:
American Express has quietly added a new credit to the Business Gold Card. Now, new and existing cardmembers can earn up to $150 in statement credits when making U.S. Squarespace purchases. Unlike some of the card’s other credits (many of which are broken down into monthly increments), this credit is annual. In order to claim this credit, cardholders must enroll by visiting the Benefits tab of their Amex account.
As of this writing, the new Squarespace benefit is not yet featured on American Express’s listing for the card. However, visiting the benefits page does reveal the credit.
With Squarespace, individuals and business owners can easily build a website and claim a custom domain. Currently, the service has plans starting at $192 per year or $25 per month.
More on the Amex Business Gold:
This Squarespace credit is only the latest perk to come to the Business Gold Card. First, cardholders can earn up to $20 per month ($240 per year) on U.S. purchases at Grubhub, FedEx, or office supply stores. Additionally, customers can claim a $12.95 per month credit that covers the cost of a Walmart+ membership.
As for rewards, the Business Gold Card earns 4x Membership Rewards points in the top two eligible spending categories each billing cycle (up to $150,000 in combined category spending per year). These eligible categories include:
- Purchases at US media providers for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio)
- U.S. purchases made from electronic goods retailers and software & cloud system providers
- U.S. purchases at restaurants, including takeout and delivery
- U.S. purchases at gas stations
- Transit purchases including trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways
- Monthly wireless telephone service charges made directly from a wireless telephone service provider in the U.S.
Elsewhere, the card earns 3x points on flights and prepaid hotel bookings made via Amex Travel. All other purchases earn 1x.
At this time, the American Express Business Gold Card carries an annual fee of $375.
My Thoughts:
Looking at the benefits line-up of the Amex Business Gold Card. I’d say this new Squarespace credit was really needed. In contrast to the likes of the consumer Platinum card, which features credits that far exceed the annual fee, the Business Gold’s credits only slightly outweighed that $375 cost. Therefore, this addition makes the card feel more complete — and Squarespace seems like an appropriate pick for a business card.
Of course, the only downside is that $150 likely won’t cover the full cost of an annual Squarespace subscription. Still, if cardmembers did purchase an annual plan at $192 and received a $150 statement credit, they’d effectively get a 78% discount. That’s a pretty good deal IMHO and, to me, makes the American Express Business Gold Card a more interesting option.
