New Wawa Mastercard Launches with FNBO as Issuer

The gas station/hoagie stop Wawa has announced a new co-branded credit card with a new issuer.

About the New Wawa Mastercard:

This week, Wawa and First National Bank of Omaha (FNBO) unveiled the new Wawa Mastercard. As the convience store chain notes, this updated product is meant to bring savings and perks to loyal Wawa customers — although the card will also be accepted anywhere Mastercard is.

Starting with rewards points, the Wawa Mastercard will earn 3x points on all Wawa purchases (excluding fuel at the pump). All other purchases earn 1 point per dollar spent. Then, when customers accrue 2,500 points, they’ll automatically be issued a $25 Wawa gift card. Note that points earned with the Wawa Mastercard are separate from Wawa Rewards points.

On top of that, Wawa Mastercard customers can save on gasoline purchases. Specifically, cardholders will receive 5¢ per gallon back as a statement credit. Plus, this perk is multiplied as a welcome bonus of sorts. When customers open a new Wawa Mastercard, they’ll earn 50¢ per gallon back as a statement credit for their first 30 days.

Prior to this, since 2015, Wawa offered a credit card issued by Citi. However, before that, Chase launched a Wawa Rewards Visa in 2005.

What They’re Saying:

Announcing the new card, Wawa Treasurer Preston Hawkins said, “We are deeply appreciative of our customers and we’re thrilled to launch a credit card experience that aligns with what they value the most. Together with FNBO and Mastercard, we’re delivering a card that fuels real savings while fulfilling the everyday moments our customers enjoy — whether it’s a morning coffee, a lunch stop, or a weekend fuel-up.”

My Thoughts:

It’s pretty fun to see that a new Wawa card from a different issuer pops up every decade. To me, that would suggest that these programs aren’t tremendously popular. Nevertheless, there is still strong brand affinity for Wawa, so I can understand why they’d want to take another shot at it.

As for what I think of this card, unfortunately, it’s probably not a great option for most people. While the 50¢ per gallon in savings is nice, that only lasts for 30 days. Although the 5¢ you get after that isn’t bad, you may be better off trying Pay with GasBuddy+, which has a base of 3¢ per gallon but can go higher with special offers. Also, that card won’t impact your credit.

Basically, unless you’re a huge Wawa fan that doesn’t mind earning rewards that can only be used at Wawa, I think this is one to skip. And then we can see what new card comes around circa 2035.
