Money at 30: The 2022 Black Friday/Small Business Saturday Deals I Partook In

In the past, I’ve often talked about my disdain for Black Friday. Despite this, it turns out that I did a decent amount of shopping on this day… albeit from the comfort of my home. Moreover, as we headed out into the world on Small Business Saturday, there were more deals to find. Thus, I figured it was worth recapping some of the items I bought over the weekend and share why I think they were good buys.

7 Things I Bought This Black Friday/Small Business Saturday

Springfield Brewing Company bourbon bottle

Springfield Brewing Company

Starting off my list is something we purchased before Black Friday but I will count it as a Small Business Saturday buy nonetheless. As the name implies, Springfield Brewing Company is a local brewery and now distillery. While the initial reason we headed to the SBC booth at the farmer’s market was that they just released the latest edition of one of my wife’s favorite beers, we noticed that they had gift sets of bourbon on sale. So, we decided to pick one up for our brother-in-law and bring a part of Springfield to our holiday celebration in Ohio.

Cometeer

Although Cometeer is a subscription service, it turns out that they also offer gift boxes consisting of four of their roasts (for a total of 32 capsules). This is something I actually didn’t realize until I went to their site and saw an offer to send one of these gift orders and save $35 for Black Friday. That seemed like an interesting premise so I went ahead and ordered one for a friend. What’s a little awkward is that I know the person I purchased this for is reading this and now knows I got a discount on their gift. But, hey, saving money is really just part of my job and work comes first!

Rolling Square

I wrote about Rolling Square’s InCharge cables — which feature USB-A, USB-C, Micro-USB, and Lightning connections all in one cable — a few months ago after purchasing a couple for myself. Having enjoyed what they have to offer, I decided to buy another InCharge XL this past week while they were 20% off. Plus, with my order, I got an InCharge Mini, which has found a new home on my keychain. My items actually arrived today and have already been deployed. So, while this wasn’t the deepest discount I got, I think it was still a good deal.

Quickflip Hero Hoodie

Quikflip

When I saw Quikflip on Shark Tank, I felt as though it was made for me. Sure enough, I’ve loved using my Hero Hoodie since I purchased it. With that, seeing that I could purchase a Hero Hoodie Lite — a lighter-weight sweatshirt that also lacks the metal bite clips of the main version — for just $33, I jumped at the deal. Seeing as my last hoodie from them was $55 and this model fetches $45 normally, I thought this 25% discount was a solid one. While it will likely start to be too cold to get the full benefit from this hoodie just yet, I’m sure it will see heavy use on future travels and day trips.

4 By 4 Brewing

This one wasn’t exactly a deal but it was a noteworthy Small Business Saturday purchase nonetheless. Over the weekend, another one of our local breweries, 4 By 4, debuted their 2023 Brew Crew membership tumblers. For an upfront cost of $95, my wife will enjoy discounted pours and special benefits throughout the year. Helping to seal the deal, she confirmed that the kombucha they have on tap is also part of the deal, so at least I have a beverage option available to me as well. Plus, 4 By 4 is located right across from where our weekly dog training group classes are, so it sounds as though we’ll have a new Saturday routine to look forward to in 2023.

RSVLTS shirt

RSVLTS

It was only a couple of weeks ago that I wrote about why I love RSVLTS’ shirts for travel… and I added to my collection of shirts over the weekend. One of the downsides I noted in my review was that their button-ups typically cost $70 or more. That’s why I was psyched to see a design I liked on sale for just $28. This particular shirt is inspired by the offbeat Nickelodeon show The Adventures of Pete and Pete, which I grew up watching. Indeed, those familiar with the program will surely see the references to the show present in the shirt’s design, while others likely won’t think much of it. Because of this, I’m definitely looking forward to this one arriving.

Coach Outlet

My wife and I are similar in that we typically thumb our noses at luxury brands, seeing many of their items as overpriced wastes of money. Yet, Coach seems to be the exception (not to say that Coach is the absolute height of luxury, to the sure), which is why we often keep an eye on the brand’s outlet site. This frequent sampling of their offerings has allowed us to snag some good deals in the past and happened to inspire a round of gift purchasing this weekend. Not only did my wife manage to pick up some cute clutches for her sisters and mother at a great price but we also managed to score 14% back via Rakuten. Basically, we knocked out a big part of our list in one fell swoop thanks to Coach.

Overall, whether I intended to or not going into it, I ended up doing quite a bit of shopping over this retail holiday weekend. Yes, this did include purchasing several gifts for others but also found me picking up a few items for myself while prices were good. While only time will tell if all of my buys were good ones, right now, I’m pretty happy with our results.
