Robinhood Reveals Family Features, New Credit Card, and More

Robinhood revealed a number of new offers during its “Take Flight” event last night.

About Robinhood for Families, Robinhood Platinum Card, and More

The investment app Robinhood had a lot to announce this week — including family features, a new credit card, and additional perks for Gold members.

First up is Robinhood for Families. Soon, customers will be able to invite other adults to join a family hub. However, members will be able to decide which accounts are visible and can set specific permissions. Elsewhere, custodial and trust accounts will soon be supported on Robinhood. Both of those features are set to roll out later this year.

Another major reveal was the announcement of the Robinhood Platinum Card. Building upon the Robinhood Gold Card (which currently has more than 700,000 users), this will be an invite-only premium credit card. Plated with real platinum, the card will carry a $695 annual fee but will boast “over $3,000” in value per year.

Among the perks of the Robinhood Platinum card are 5% cashback on dining, $250 per year in DoorDash credits (plus a complimentary DashPass membership), and Oura ring membership, up to 10% back on hotel and rental car bookings made via the Robihood Banking app, $300 in annual travel credits, $500 in annual hotel credits, $250 per year in autonomous ride credits, a complimentary Robihood Gold subscription, a Priority Pass for airport lounge access, and more. However, these credits and offers do have limitations and other requirements. It’s currently unclear how Robinhood will determine which customers will be invited to apply for the Platinum Card.

Speaking of Robinhood Gold, the app is also introducing some new benefits for the paid subscription. For one, a “rotating suite of rewards” will bring customers such perks as premium ticket drops, cryptocurrency gifts, perks for partner brands, and more. Another new feature is Early Dividends, which will allow members to receive dividends from eligible U.S. stocks up to one month early. This particular benefit is expected to launch next month.

What They’re Saying:

Discussing the new Robinhood Platinum Card, Robinhood Money GM and VP Deepak Rao said, “We built the Gold Card to be the best card for everyday spending, and customer demand showed us there was room to push the boundaries even further. The Platinum Card offers higher limits, elite rewards and luxury benefits, and raises the bar for what customers should expect from a premium credit card.”

My Thoughts:

Obviously, when I saw the words “Robinhood Platinum Card” pop up, I was intrigued. That excitement was instantly dashed as I started to look at the details, though. For one, considering that I still haven’t been able to get a Gold Card, I have very little hope of getting this “invitation-only” option. Even if I did get one, I don’t think I’d want to take them up on it, as the perks of the card aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. For example, that $250 in DoorDash credits is actually two credits of up to $10 a month (plus an additional $10 in January) that are triggered by purchases of $50 or more. $50 in a single DoorDash order?! No, thank you.

On the positive side, the idea of early dividends is a really clever idea. Although I don’t know how many stocks will be eligible for this benefit, I think this is a smart and creative feature that I could easily see being copied by others. As a Gold member myself, I look forward to checking that one out when it premieres next month.
