Rakuten American Express Card Offering Increased Intro Bonus

Those applying for the Rakuten American Express Card can currently claim an enhanced welcome bonus.

About the Rakuten American Express Card Bonus Offer:

For a limited time, new Rakuten credit card customers can earn an increased bonus after hitting the minimum spending requirement. Currently, the card is boasting a bonus of $200 after spending at least $2,000 in purchases on the card within the first 90 days from account opening. For context, when the card debuted last summer, it offered a $25 bonus after $500 in spending.

More on the Rakuten American Express Credit Card:

With the Rakuten American Express Card, customers can earn extra cashback on every Rakuten purchase they make. Specifically, cardholders enjoy 4% back — in addition to any earnings from the Rakuten portal itself. The card also earns a total of 10% back on Rakuten Dining purchases (5% back from the card and 5% back from the platform). Speaking of restaurants, the Rakuten card offers 2% back at all restaurants and 2% back at grocery stores. All other purchases earn 1% back.

Interestingly, while cashback is the default for the Rakuten American Express Card, those with other rewards currencies can opt to earn those instead. For example, those who select Amex Membership Rewards points for their Rakuten account will see their credit card earnings also rewarded as MR points. Similarly, with Bilt now partnering with Rakuten, cardholders can choose to redeem their cashback for Bilt Points. However, following the May Rakuten payout, those with Bilt status lower than Silver will see a reduced conversion rate. Those with Silver, Gold, or Platinum status will continue to be able to convert Rakuten cashback to Bilt Points at a rate of 1¢ to 1 point.

My Thoughts:

Looking at the terms, it seems this could be a very limited promotion. So, if it really does expire by the time you get to it, you may want to check back and wait for it to reemerge in the future, since this $200 bonus is far better than the standard $25.

As for the card itself, the addition of the Bilt Point redemption definitely makes it a more interesting product for Bilt Points fans — although, as mentioned, it’s really only a good deal for those with status. Of course, the Membership Rewards points option is also attractive for Amex users.

Lastly, if you aren’t currently a Rakuten user, I’d definitely recommend signing up as its easily my most-used cashback platform. Even better, you can currently earn a $50 bonus after spending at least $50 with in your first 90 days when you sign up using our link.
