Chase Reveals Surprise Q2 Bonus Category for Freedom Cards
As Chase continues to celebrate its Freedom brand’s 15th anniversary, the bank has unveiled another surprise bonus category for the second quarter.
About Q2’s Surprise Freedom Category:
For one month only, Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex customers can earn up to 5% back on another spending category. Starting June 1st, Internet, Cable, & Phone Services will join this quarter’s bonus category line-up.
This category joins the previously announced second quarter bonus categories that have been in effect since April 1st. These include Amazon purchases and Select Streaming Services. For the Amazon category, goods purchased at Amazon.com, digital purchases from, Amazon.com Gift Cards, Amazon Fresh orders, and Amazon Prime subscriptions are all eligible. Plus, in-store and online purchases from Whole Foods Market are also included. Note that purchases from one of Amazon’s international sites will not qualify, however.
As for the streaming category, Chase released a list of eligible services (although purchases outside of the subscription service itself will not qualify, even if they’re from a specified provider). That list includes:
- Disney+
- Hulu
- ESPN+
- Netflix
- Sling
- Vudu
- Fubo TV
- Apple Music
- SiriusXM
- Pandora
- Spotify
- YouTube TV
- Max
- Paramount+
- Peacock
- Showtime
Despite the addition of another category, the 5% cashback offer is still capped at $1,500 in combined spending for the quarter. This means that any eligible Amazon, Select Streaming Service, or (starting June 1st) Internet, Cable, & Phone Services purchases will count toward that spending cap. In total, cardholders can earn up to $75 from this quarterly bonus.
Those who have yet to activate their Q2 bonus will need to do so on ChaseBonus.com by June 15th in order to qualify. However, those who previously activated it will automatically be eligible for the surprise bonus category. All three categories will expire after June 30th.
Chase first debuted a surprise bonus category last quarter, after announcing the celebration of the Freedom card’s 15th anniversary. From March 1st through 30th, cardholders could also earn up to 5% back on Tax Preparation and Insurance purchases.
Although the Chase Freedom card is being highlighted in this celebration, the core product is no longer available to new applicants. Instead, the Chase Freedom Flex features many of the same perks (including the 5% rotating quarterly bonus categories) along with other rewards.
My Thoughts:
Just as the first quarter surprise bonus category was super practical, I feel as though Internet, Cable, & Phone Services will be a great category for a lot of Chase Freedom/Freedom Flex customers. Therefore, if you’re a cardholder and have yet to max out your quarterly bonus so far, hopefully you’ll be able to do so next month with the help of this addition. Also, once again, I do think it’s awesome that Chase is continuing this 15th anniversary promotion. I look forward to seeing what they have up their sleeve for the third quarter of this celebratory year.
