Amazon Prime Partners with Uber Eats, Ditches Grubhub

Amazon is mixing things up and switching to a new food delivery partner for Prime perks.

About the Amazon Prime-Uber Eats Partnership:

Today, Amazon announced a new partnership with Uber Eats. As a result, Prime members can now place Uber Eats orders through the platform — and enjoy perks in the process.

Prime customers can place orders through Amazon.com or the Amazon Shopping app and pay $0 delivery fees on orders of $25. Notably, users will not need to have an Uber account or use the Uber Eats app to do so. By Amazon’s estimates, this perk could save customers more than $175 per year.

To celebrate this new collaboration, Amazon and Uber Eats are offering a special deal to members. Currently, customers can save $20 on their first two food delivery orders of $25 or more made via Amazon. This deal is available through November 18th. Additionally, Amazon Prime Visa cardholders can earn 5% back on all Uber Eats orders through December 5th.

The new Uber Eats partnership spells the end for Amazon’s previous food delivery deal with Grubhub. For customers who had a Grubhub+ membership through Prime, the delivery service will extend that membership through December 31st, 2027 at no cost.

What They’re Saying:

Announcing the new partnership, Amazon Prime worldwide vice president Jamil Ghani said, “Whether it’s game night, family night, or date night, Prime’s new Uber Eats membership benefit makes getting dinner delivered even easier. This is what Prime is all about: unlimited free, fast delivery on a wide selection of products, big savings, fantastic entertainment, and now even more value on restaurant delivery with Uber Eats, all in a single membership.”

My Thoughts:

Well, this update is like double dipping for me. Not only do I get to keep my Grubhub+ for another year, but I now get to take advantage of this special Uber Eats offer. At least I think I do — I haven’t actually tried it yet. I’m also hoping that this offer couples nicely with the Uber Cash I get from my Amex Platinum card, so we’ll see how that works. UPDATE: It seems that this doesn’t actually link to your Uber account, so the Uber Cash wouldn’t work. On the bright side, it looks as though the $20 off offer will apply to either delivery or pick-up.

Aside from this $20 off offer, though, I don’t think this benefit will do much for me, even though I do use Uber Eats far more than I do/did Grubhub. That’s because said Platinum card now also includes an Uber One membership. But for Amazon Prime members who want to save on delivery fees, hopefully this partnership proves valuable for them.
