Academy Sports Launches New MyAcademy Rewards Mastercard

The popular sporting goods store Academy is rolling out an updated rewards credit card and loyalty program.

About the MyAcademy Rewards Mastercard:

Academy Sports + Outdoors and Bread Financial are teaming up for a new credit card offering. This week, the retailer announced the launch of the MyAcademy Rewards Mastercard. The update also corresponds with changes to the MyAcademy program.

With the MyAcademy Rewards Mastercard, customers can earn 5% off purchases at Academy plus free shipping from Academy.com with no minimum order amount. Additionally, cardholders can earn 2% back in rewards for purchases they make with the card outside of Academy. This means that every $1,000 spent on non-Academy purchases can earn a $20 reward. These rewards are deposited directly into cardholders’ MyAcademy Rewards account, which can be viewed on Academy.com or in the Academy app. Lastly, as part of the MyAcademy program, members also enjoy a $15 off coupon on their birthday.

There are also some welcome offers available with the MyAcademy Rewards Mastercard. First, new cardholders can earn $30 off a purchase of $30.01 or more at Academy on the same day of account opening. Plus, customers can earn a $50 Reward after spending $500 in non-Academy purchases with the card within their first 90 days from account opening.

Previously, Academy and Bread Financial offered the Academy Sports + Outdoors Credit Card, which was only a private-label store credit card. A version of that option is still available, but has been rebranded as the MyAcademy Rewards Credit Card. It features the same Academy perks but lacks the the 2% back in rewards on non-Academy purchases and $50 rewards bonus perks.

My Thoughts:

First, if you’re an Academy shopper debating between the two credit card products now available, I’d recommend going for the new Mastercard version as it gives you greater flexibility. On that note, I have to give some props to Academy for offering 2% back on all purchases instead of the standard 1%. Even if these rewards can only be redeemed at Academy, it’s better than most.

Having said that, as always, I do think it’s better to go with a credit card that earns actual cashback instead of store-specific rewards. If you want to earn a flat 2% across the board, I’d recommend something like the Wells Fargo Active Cash card or Citi Double Cash Card instead. But, for those who shop enough at Academy to make the 5% off worth it and would happily use their 2% back to shop there, then this is at least an upgrade from the previous product.

2025 SoFi Checking and Savings Review

Ever since I started taking an interest in the FinTech sector, one company whose name I’ve seen pop up over and over again is SoFi. That was later sent into overdrive as the company has not only become a household name thanks to its stadium naming rights deal but also because of the company’s continued product expansions. The most interesting development in my mind is SoFi’s acquisition of Golden Pacific...
