OnePay Latest App to Partner with April to Offer Free Tax Filing

You can add OnePay to the growing list of platforms customers can now use to file their tax returns.

About the OnePay-April Partnership:

Walmart-backed FinTech OnePay is introducing a new feature just in time for tax season. Now, OnePay Cash customers can file their taxes for free using the app. This capability comes courtesy of April.

Using this feature, users can file both federal and state returns for no cost. Additionally, OnePay notes that there are no upsells and that customers have access to unlimited live support. Those entitled to tax refunds can also receive their money up to five days early when they elect to direct deposit their funds into their OnePay account.

Further incentivizing customers to give this option a shot, OnePay is running a sweepstakes. Users who choose to direct deposit their federal refund into their OnePay account will automatically be entered for a chance to see their refund total doubled. This perk is capped at a total of $5,000 per winner. In total, 10 winners will be selected for this promotion.

While OnePay customers can find the tax filing feature in the OnePay app, April provides an option to have a link emailed to them. With this link, users can choose to continue the filing process on a desktop computer or other device.

This announcement from OnePay follows another FinTech partnering with April. Earlier this month, PayPal revealed that it would be bringing free tax filing capabilities to PayPal Debit Card customers.

What They’re Saying:

Discussing this new feature and partnership, OnePay’s GM Banking and Core App Harsh Gupta said, “Tax season is one of the biggest financial moments of the year and for too many people. People shouldn’t have to pay just to do their taxes, or bounce between apps to manage their money. By offering free, in-app tax filing, we’re making it easier to file with confidence, get refunds quickly, and keep taxes simple and in one place.”

Meanwhile, April CEO and co-founder Ben Borodach stated, “We are thrilled to partner with OnePay and make April’s frictionless filing experience available to their customers this tax season,. Adding taxes to the OnePay suite of services complements their robust product suite, allowing customers to spend, invest, build credit, and manage their taxes all within one convenient app.”

My Thoughts:

Just as I did when news about PayPal partnering with April broke, I went through the first few steps of filing through OnePay to see what I could discover. The first thing I noticed is that, unlike with PayPal, I wasn’t given the option to upgrade to the expert assistance option for $35. I guess that means that when OnePay says “Customers also have access to unlimited live support from April at every step of the filing process,” they mean it! Assuming it is the case that OnePay includes the same level of customer support but without the upgrade fee, then this would be the better option. However, I cannot fully confirm that.

Sidenote: When I opened OnePay to try this filing interface, I also learned that the app has launched stock trading support. In fact, I was able to claim a $5 bonus for opening a brokerage account.

The moral of the story is that OnePay is continuing to expand and may be worth checking out this tax season and beyond.
