Hawaiian Airlines and Barclays Renew Credit Card Partnership
Hawaiian Airlines and its long-time co-branded credit card partner are renewing their relationship once again.
About the extension:
Recently, Barclays and Hawaiian announced that they’d be extending their partnership. The two companies have collaborated on a co-branded credit card program for more than a decade. Currently, Barclays issues the Hawaii Airlines World Elite Mastercard, as well as the Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Business Mastercard.
About the Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard:
With the Hawaiian Airlines Mastercard, flyers can earn HawaiianMiles and enjoy special perks while flying. Starting with rewards, the card earns 3x miles on Hawaiian Airlines purchases. Additionally, cardholders can earn 2x miles on gas, 2x miles on dining, and 2x on groceries. All other purchases earn 1 mile per dollar spent.
In terms of other benefits, primary cardholders can receive two free checked bags on eligible flights. Plus, each cardholder anniversary year, customers can get a $100 companion discount for roundtrip travel between Hawaii and the Continental U.S. on the airline.
Currently, the Hawaiian Airlines World Elite Mastercard is also offering an enhanced welcome bonus. New cardholders can earn 70,000 bonus miles after spending $2,000 on purchases on the card in the first 90 days. Of note, the Hawaiian Airlines Mastercard does carry a $99 annual fee.

Additionally, Hawaiian Airlines EVP and CMO Avi Mannis stated, “Our extended partnership with Barclays ensures our cardholders will continue to enjoy exceptional benefits and superior value when earning HawaiianMiles and traveling to, from or within Hawai’i.”
My thoughts:
Normally, a contract renewal wouldn’t really be interesting news. However, what caught my attention about this story is that Hawaiian is renewing its partnership with Barclays while it’s still set to merge with Alaska Airlines. Considering that Alaska’s cards are issued by Bank of America, I do wonder whether this agreement is any indication of which bank will win out when the companies are combined. Then again, with Alaska and Hawaiian looking to preserve both brands, perhaps the credit card contracts will also remain separate? At this point it’s anyone’s guess — but it’s something I’ll be keeping an eye on.
