Amex Announces Haneda Airport Centurion Lounge Location

American Express has revealed its next international Centurion Lounge location.

About the Centurion Lounge at HND:

The Centurion Lounge network is expanding, with Amex announcing that a new location at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND) is set to debut in 2025. This new lounge will be found in Terminal 3 on the fourth floor. While Centurion currently has locations in India, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Sweden, England, Hong Kong, and the United States, this will mark their first lounge in Japan. However, HND Terminal 3 is currently home to a Delta Sky Club, which American Express Platinum and Centurion card customers can access when flying Delta.

According to a press release, the Haneda lounge will take design inspiration from Japanese traditions and feature art from the area. Additionally, food and beverage selection will allow travelers to experience Tokyo’s rich food culture.

Amex confirms that entry to the Centurion Lounge will be available to those with a Platinum Card, Business Platinum Card, or Centurion Card issued in Japan or elsewhere in the world.

About the Platinum Card’s lounge access:

One of the key perks of the Platinum Card by American Express is its airport lounge access. Not only can cardmembers enjoy complimentary access to Centurion Lounge locations but can also access more than 1,300 lounges via Priority Pass. Additionally, cardmembers flying Delta can also visit Delta Sky Club locations.

Due to crowding at lounge locations, Amex and Delta have both updated access policies in recent years. First, while Centurion Lounges previously allowed cardholders to bring complimentary guests, default access is now limited to the Platinum cardholders themselves (although authorized users with the paid Platinum AU card are also welcome). However, those who spend at least $75,000 per year on their Platinum card can bring two guests on their visits.

As for Delta Sky Clubs, a guest fee of $50 per person applies. Additionally, effective as of January 2024, cardholders with Basic Economy tickets will not be eligible to visit Sky Clubs. Then, starting February 1st, 2025, Platinum cardholders will receive 10 Sky Club visits per year. This can be increased to unlimited visits if customers spend at least $75,000 on their card in a calendar year. Meanwhile, those who use up their 10 visits, don’t qualify for unlimited visits, and are flying Delta can still enter Sky Clubs locations for a per-visit fee.

What they’re saying:

Commenting on the upcoming Centurion Lounge location at Haneda Airport, American Express Travel President Audrey Hendley said, “American Express is expanding the presence of Centurion Lounges at international airports around the world that are popular with our customers. Travel demand to Japan is on the rise, particularly among millennials and Gen Z, so the opening of a Centurion Lounge at Japan’s popular travel destination, Haneda Airport, is a significant addition to American Express’ global lounge network.”

Hendley continued, “We look forward to serving delicious food and beverages at the new Centurion Lounge at Haneda Airport, where our Japanese and international customers can relax and refresh before their flight.”

My thoughts:

Despite having been to Tokyo three times, I have yet to visit Haneda Airport — and, to be honest, I’m still a bit salty about it. Of course, if that continues to be the case for future visits, I’ll have even more reason to be upset!

Obviously, news of another Centurion Lounge location is great news for Amex Platinum cardmembers. That said, I do think it’s interesting that Amex continues to build new Centurions near existing Delta Sky Clubs (for example, they just opened one in Atlanta where there are already half a dozen Sky Clubs). Perhaps that’s part of their strategy to take the burden of Delta’s clubs, but it means that those flying other airlines besides Delta may end up missing out on these new locations.

Regardless, I look forward to (hopefully) visiting this new Centurion HND location sometime in the future.
