Nibbles Adds Automatic Pet Insurance Claims, Drops Annual Fee

A recently launched rewards credit card is already making some big changes, including adding another unique feature.

About the Nibbles Card’s Automatic Claims:

Nibbles is making it even easier for its credit card customers to file pet insurance claims. The rewards card (which includes pet health coverage) has now announced Automated Claims Processing. According to the company, when pet owners pay using their Nibbles Card at any licensed veterinary provider, they’ll be able to receive automatic reimbursement.

As a press release announcing this feature explains, Nibbles is able to identify eligible vet services using AI-powered systems. This will then allow the service to file claims on the cardholder’s behalf. With this feature, cardholders are also able to enjoy faster reimbursement times.

More on the Nibbles Card:

Another major change to the Nibbles Card is that the offering now has no annual fee. Originally, the card charged an annual fee of $250.

Despite dropping the annual fee, the Nibbles Card continues to offer up to $10,000 a year in pet insurance coverage. By default, this policy has a $500 annual deductible and 80% coinsurance (after deductible). However, cardmembers can customize their plan for a fee. This coverage includes procedures, illnesses, diagnostics, medications, accidents, and supportive care, but excludes pre-existing conditions, non-emergency dental work, or other pet expenses such as boarding, grooming, and others. While vet fees, take-home prescriptions, and preventive care are not covered in the main plan, these can also be added.

In terms of rewards, the Nibbles card earns 3x points on pet and vet purchases. Specifically, this includes businesses with merchant codes that fall under either veterinary services or pet shops. All other purchases earn 1x points, with points currently redeemable for statement credits at a value of 1¢ each.

What They’re Saying:

Commenting on the updates to the Nibble Card (and specifically the automated claims feature), Nibbles co-founder and CTO A.T. Fouty said, “We saw a broken system where people wanted to do right by their pets but were blocked by cost, complexity, and delays. We are rethinking how we can best support pet parents, making it affordable and easy for more Americans to care for their animals without compromise.”

Fouty added, “We’re passionate about pet ownership because it makes people better. By removing financial and administrative roadblocks, we empower families to do what’s best for their pets. That’s not just good business, it’s good humanity.”

My Thoughts:

As I said when details of the Nibbles card were first announced, the pet insurance coverage that came with the card seemed like a fairly good deal, seeing as I was paying around the card’s then $250 annual fee for my pet’s insurance (through Lemonade). Thus, now that the card has no annual fee and seemingly offers the same level of coverage, it may seem like a no-brainer.

On the other hand, though, I do actually have some worries about this approach. In my mind, getting rid of that fee will either 1) make the card unsustainable or 2) mean that Nibbles is looking to reinstate the fee later after acquiring a certain number of cardholders. The latter isn’t an uncommon strategy in general, but it’s a bit shady for a credit card in my opinion (but, to be clear, I’m not saying that this is their plan). In other words, while it may be a good deal now, I worry about how long it will last.

My concerns aside, I think that the Nibbles Card is a really interesting concept — especially with this new automated claims feature. So, I wish the card success as Nibbles navigates its business plan.
