Details of Virgin Red Rewards Card Revealed as Waitlist Opens

Following the announcement that Synchrony and Virgin were launching a new co-branded card, details about the Virgin Red Rewards World Elite Mastercard have now been revealed.

About the Virgin Red Rewards Mastercard:

As previously announced, the Virgin Red Rewards card will allow cardholders to earn Virgin Points on Virgin hotel stays, flights, cruises, experiences, and more. Specifically, customers will be able to earn 3x points on Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Hotels, and Virgin Voyages purchases. Plus, the card will earn 2x on dining, 2x on groceries, 2x on select streaming services, and 2x on EV charging purchases. All other purchases earn 1 point per dollar spent.

With the Virgin Red Rewards card, customers can also unlock exclusive Personal Perks. Cardholders who spend $15,000 per year on the card can choose 1 Personal Perk while those who spend $30,000 per year can choose a total of 2. These perk options include:

  • Virgin Atlantic: A Flying Club reward voucher for a companion seat
  • Virgin Atlantic: A Flying Club reward voucher for a cabin upgrade.
  • Virgin Hotels: One free night stay
  • Virgin Hotels: One hotel suite upgrade
  • Virgin Voyages: Up to $300 Bar Tab credit
  • Virgin Voyages: Blue Extra perks package (including laundry service, an exclusive cocktail party, and daily coffee credits)

As for other benefits, cardholders can earn 25 Flying Club Tier Points for every $2,500 in eligible purchases made (up to 50 Tier Points per month). Additionally, once per year, cardholders can claim a third night free after booking two nights at a participating Virgin Hotels properties. Plus, cardholders can earn an anniversary bonus of 5,000 Virgin Points each year upon renewal.

These details come as a waitlist for the card is now open. Those interested in being notified when applications open can go to the Virgin Red Rewards card site. When the card launches, it will also offer a special welcome offer. Those who spent at least $3,000 on the card within their first 90 days will earn 40,000 Virgin Points.

The Virgin Red Rewards Mastercard will carry an annual fee of $99. However, it will not charge any foreign transaction fees.

My thoughts:

Even if the Virgin Red Rewards Mastercard might not be for me, I do think that there are a lot of interesting elements to it. In particular, the Personal Perks that cardholders can unlock seem pretty appealing (and the $15,000 spending requirement is relatively reasonable). But, beyond that, the other benefits could also be useful. The only disappointing part is the rewards categories — which aren’t great in terms of earning rates but could be worth more depending on how you value Virgin Points.

In any case, unless you’re a Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Hotels, or Virgin Voyages loyalist, this card won’t be for you. But, if you’re a fan of the brand, then this $99 annual fee card could unlock some great perks for you.
