Citi Rebrands Premier Card as Citi Strata Premier Card

Citi has announced a new name and some (slight) changes to its Citi Premier card.

About the Citi Strata Premier:

Following weeks of rumors, Citi has officially announced the rebranding of its Citi Premier Card to the Citi Strata Premier Card. According to Citi, this new name is meant to evoke a sense of ambition and adventure. While the perks and rewards of the Strata Premier will largely resemble its predecessor, there are some new additions as well.

With the Citi Strata Premier, cardholders can earn 3 ThankYou Points per $1 spent on air travel and hotel purchases, 3x at restaurants, 3x at supermarkets, and 3x at gas stations. Plus, new for this version of the card, EV charging station purchases now also earn 3 x points. All other purchases earn 1x points.

Like many other card issuers these days, Citi also has its own travel portal. When booking hotel stays, car rentals, and attractions through Citi Travel, Strata Premier cardholders can earn 10x ThankYou Points. Additionally, the Strata Premier has added travel protection benefits, including trip cancellation/trip interruption coverage, trip delay coverage, lost or damaged luggage coverage, and more.

As for other perks, the Strata Premier card offers a $100 Annual Hotel Benefit. With this, cardholders can get $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more when they book via Citi Travel. This benefit can be used once per calendar year.

Of note, the Citi Strata Premier does carry a $95 annual fee (which matches the previous Premier card).

To celebrate the official launch of the Citi Strata Premier, the bank is offering a special welcome bonus for a limited time. Currently, new cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus ThankYou points after spending $4,000 on the card within their first three months of account opening.

What they’re saying:

Commenting on the updates to the card’s name and perks, Citi’s Head of Proprietary Products for U.S. Branded Cards Anthony Merola said, “We heard from our cardmembers that they want to be rewarded for their travels as well as their everyday spending. The Citi Strata Premier Card now offers extra ways for cardmembers to earn on travel and turn their purchases into future experiences.”

My thoughts:

Starting with the name, I do like the sound of “Strata Premier” — largely because it’s less generic than the prior name. The card’s updated design also looks pretty nice, in my opinion.

As for the benefits, it’s not a bad starter travel card. With the Strata Premier offering 3x on air travel and hotels as well as at restaurants, supermarkets, and gas stations/EV charging stations, it’s a well-rounded list of reward categories that balances the travel and everyday aspects. Plus, while the $95 annual fee may be a bit of a detractor, the $100 Annual Hotel Benefit can completely offset that. So, if you’re looking for a travel card and aren’t quite ready for the likes of an Amex Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve, perhaps the newly-named Citi Strata Premier is up your alley.

2024 SoFi Checking and Savings Review

Ever since I started taking an interest in the FinTech sector, one company whose name I’ve seen pop up over and over again is SoFi. Lately it seems as though that theme has been sent into overdrive as the company has not only become a household name thanks to its stadium naming rights deal but also because of the company’s continued product expansions. The most interesting development in my mind...
