Avant, Major League Soccer Launch MLS Forward Credit Card

Avant and Major League Soccer (MLS) have launched a new co-branded rewards credit card.

About the card:

The new MLS Forward Credit Card powered by Avant gives soccer fans a mix of everyday rewards and special MLS-related perks.

First, cardholders can earn 5x rewards on purchases from the MLS Store online. Additionally, the card earns 3x on gas, 2x on dining, 2x on groceries, and 1x on all other purchases. Not only can these rewards be redeemed for cashback but can also be used for MLS tickets or MLS Store gift cards.

As for other perks, cardholders can enjoy exclusive pre-sale ticket access, expedited entrance into MLS special events, and more. Additionally, MLS Forward Card customers get 15% off MLS Store merchandise. Finally, the card offers two MLS designs as well as branded designs from the league’s 21 clubs — for a total of 23 different design options.

With the launch of the MLS Forward Credit Card, Avant is also offering a welcome bonus. Currently, new cardholders can earn 5,000 bonus points once they spend $1,000 in purchases on the card within their first 90 days.

The MLS Forward card carries no annual fee.

What they’re saying:

Commenting on the new card, Major League Soccer’s EVP of Partnership Marketing Jen Cramer said, “We are thrilled to partner with Avant on the launch of the MLS Forward Credit Card which marks an exciting evolution in our partnership. This innovative initiative taps into our fans deep rooted passions, creating bespoke experiences that truly resonate with them.” Cramer continued, “We look forward to working with Avant so fans can showcase their fandom and receive valuable benefits with everyday purchases.”

Additionally, Avant’s CMO Amanda Reierson said of the partnership, “MLS and Avant are united in our shared commitment to creating exceptional experiences. The MLS Forward Card powered by Avant, issued by WebBank, helps facilitate forward momentum – in fans’ financial lives, and in connecting with the brand and teams they love.”

My thoughts:

There are a few things that the MLS Forward Credit Card has going for it that I’d say are somewhat unexpected. First, the 3x on gas category is fairly strong while the 2x categories are nice inclusions (even if 2x is basically the status quo). Next, the fact that customers can redeem points for cashback in addition to MLS rewards is great — although I didn’t see explicit confirmation that the point value is 1¢ each for cashback. Lastly, the card has no annual fee to worry about, which is always a good thing.

Despite these upsides, the card is still fairly specialized and will likely only appeal to MLS fans. Also of note is that, according to the card’s site, credit limits top out at a relatively low $3,000. So, while fans may want the card and be able to show support for their favorite team, others may want to look for a more generalized rewards card option.
