WordPress-Powered Websites Now Account for 30% of the Internet

Despite competition from other platforms and services, WordPress continues to dominate when it comes to the number of websites it powers. According to a study by W3Techs and reported by VentureBeat, WordPress is now used on 30% of sites on the web. That’s up from 2015 when a quarter of all websites utilized the WordPress platform. Moreover, in terms of CMS market share, WordPress actually commands 60.2%. Given this impressive figure, it’s worth looking at why WordPress is so popular and why it could be right for small business websites.

For the sake of clarity, there are two different types of WordPress sites — both of which are being counted in the 30% figure. First there’s the self-hosted option, allowing small business owners and others to build their site using WordPress’s platform but have it hosted by another service. Alternatively WordPress offers their WordPress.com hosted platform, which serves as an “all-in-one” option.

One of the reasons WordPress remains so popular is its adaptability and the variety of themes it offers. Since it is the leading platform, designers and developers offer a number of WordPress themes to fit the needs of your business or blog. For example,  AMPWPToools.com (which Dyer News currently utilizes) takes advantage of Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages platform in order to deliver fast-loading pages on any device. However, speaking of WordPress themes, it’s important to use caution when looking for free themes as some may contain malware. Instead, it’s best to stick to the vetted free themes found in the WordPress’s gallery or if you are really serious pay for a premium theme.

Another benefit of WordPress’s popularity is the number of plugins available for their sites. This includes everything from tools for managing e-mail lists to further customizing features on your site. Additionally the widely-used Yoast plugin can help site owners understand their search engine optimization (SEO) and improve their rankings.

Of course, although WordPress does dominate when it comes to content management systems (CMS), they aren’t the only option available. Behind WordPress’s 30%, Joomla powers 3.1% of sites, followed by Drupal (2.2%), Magneto (1.2%), and Shopify (1%). Beyond those options, platforms such as Squarespace and Wix are also gaining users.

While it’s no surprise that WordPress ranks top among other CMS and site options, it’s fascinating to see just how far ahead of the competition the platform really is. Although that’s not a reason to choose WordPress for your small business site in and of itself, it is certainly something to consider. That said, when it comes to building a small business site — whether it’s to host a blog, provide potential customers with needed info, or engage in e-commerce — it’s always best to do your research and find the platform that works best for you and your business.
