Money at 30: Money at 31 A Year Older Means New Financial Goals

Money at 30: Money at 31

31Today marks a somewhat exciting but overall inconsequential event: it’s my 31st birthday. I say this is inconsequential because how is 31 really all that different from 30? (and, despite my joke a few weeks ago, I won’t actually be changing the name of this column). However the occasion has got me thinking about things I ought to be doing — even more so than the New Year did.

So with that I’d like to discuss some of the things that I have been thinking about lately and share some my plans for the upcoming year, including topics to cover and new areas to explore.

It’s time to learn more about investing

Many years ago I accompanied my father to a series of seminars all about investing, stock market options, and technical analysis. While I retained some of that knowledge, I’m still very much of novice when it comes to the market or other types of investments. In fact, aside from various retirement accounts my wife and I have, I haven’t even tried any hands-on investing.

Perhaps this is the year that changes. After following this site for a while, I’ve grown incredibly interesting in peer to peer lending, which seems like a good alternative to me. Having done some traveling recently I’m also interested in Forex, although that’s way beyond me at this point. Eventually I’m sure I’ll go back and look at those old books I have and try my hand at “play money” investing before I try anything for real but, for now, I think P2P is more my speed.

It’s time to write another book

As I recently wrote about on this very site, it turns out that self-publishing a book isn’t as hard as you might think. In fact I’ve already done it… but it has been a couple of years now. There is another idea that’s been stuck in my head for the past few months and I believe that now is the time to put pen to paper (er, cursor and keystroke to Word document?) and craft my sophomore effort.

Incidentally it’s not the task of producing my manuscript that’s holding me back — although the topic is kind of a moving target at this point — but the fact that I’ll be diving into a market I know very little about. With my past book, I already had all the Disney connections I needed in place, which assured me that a monetary return was fairly likely. However with this new project I may have to rethink my strategy a bit and perhaps get more into the world of e-book exclusives. Whatever happens I’m excited to get this idea out of my head and also look forward to updating my guide with all the new info I gain from the experience.

It’s time up my side-hustle game

Speaking of writing and selling another book, my wife and I have been trying to think of other ways to make some extra cash for ourselves beyond our day jobs. Although we have yet to crack that nut exactly, it’s something I think about often. With her birthday just around the corner (I’m actually only 18 days older than her), I suspect that topic will be at the forefront for both of us in the coming months and I’m sure we’ll come up with something awesome to pursue before we turn 32 (hey, that rhymed!).

So that’s what you can look forward to hearing about each week as the still-titled Money at 30 column rolls on. Writing this blog each week has really helped me expand my mind in a number of ways and so I very much look forward to continuing that exploration. And of course a big “thanks” goes out to all of you for following along — I’ll see you next Tuesday!
